Portland Public Library, Maine’s largest and most diverse public library, currently has the following opening:

Team Leader: Business and Government (posted 9.23.11)

This position specializes in planning and delivery of services to business and government communities. The position is also a member of the Institutional Research Team and also provides information services to the public in general as a member of the reference staff. 

Major responsibilities:

  1. As Team Leader of the Business and Government Team (See Appendix A), keeps abreast of opportunities to promote the business and government services of the Library; collaborates with special groups in the Library service area including local government employees and businesses of all size. Conducts activities of the team which include targeted collection development in all formats, information service, public programs, training programs and needs assessment. 

  2. Provides professional general reference and information services to the public of all ages; also performs very specialized and complex reference services related to the area of business and government information.

  3. Stays abreast of emerging technologies and knowledge of online information services, software and hardware that enhance the delivery of business reference services mindful of best practice continues public service improvements.

  4. Through the PPL Technology Center, conducts staff and public training in the use of internet and Library owned digital services useful to patrons seeking business, personal finance and career-related information; conducts outreach to the local (ARRC area) business community

  5. As a member of the Institutional Research Team participates in all activities of the Team including data collection and analysis.

  6. Manages a selective depository of U.S. Government publications in accordance with federal statutes and Government Printing Office guidelines.

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited university and a Master’s degree from an accredited graduate library school, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

  • Knowledge of the Federal Document Depository System; knowledge of general library reference materials as well as broad knowledge of books and authors; experience with automated library technology systems.

  • Three to five years of experience in library service or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.

  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other members of the library staff and administration 

  • Contributes a positive, creative and energetic force to the work; demonstrates skills in collaboration especially working with staff members whose interests and needs differ.

  • Expertise in technology and ability to guide patrons in the use of these systems.

  • Ability to project a professional appearance appropriate to a business environment.

  • Experience or training that demonstrates the ability to supervise staff and volunteers. 

  • Strong service orientation and demeanor appropriate to provide a high level of service to a diverse public.

  • Sufficient physical stamina and general health to perform tasks as noted above.

This is a 37.5 hour position with benefits.  Schedule alternates between M-F; T-S.  It is paid at the LI rate.  Please apply in writing with a cover letter and resume.  It is very helpful to receive your application by Monday, October 3, 2011.
