Ways to Give
Donate
Online Now!
The Portland
Public Library accepts gifts of cash, stock, personal property, and
deferred gifts. We encourage pledges over three to four years to
"stretch" your giving capacity for this unique project.
Because each method has its own specific tax benefits that may change
with each tax year, donors should tailor their gift to the method that
best suits their personal needs.
Gifts of all
types may be restricted for their use as well as named in memory or
honor of a loved one.
Cash
A gift of cash is the easiest, most popular way to support the Portland
Public Library. Your cash gift is tax deductible up to 50% of your
adjusted gross income as claimed on your tax forms for the same year, or
carried over for a maximum of five years. We accept credit cards;

Corporate
Matching Gifts
You or your spouse may work for a company or serve on a corporate board
that has a matching gift program. Please contact your company's
human resources office to determine if your company has a matching gifts
program and how you can leverage your personal gift to the library
campaign.
Securities
A gift of appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds offer a substantial
tax advantage for the donor. You can avoid capital gains tax and
deduct the total value of the stock on the date the gift is received by
the Portland Public Library. Transfers are easy to arrange, and
gifts of securities often provide a way to "stretch" your
giving potential beyond what it might be in cash.
Tangible
Personal Property
As with gifts of securities, you are entitled to a charitable deduction
for gifts of personal property such as antiques, fine art, equipment, or
other tangible property. You as the donor are responsible for a
qualified appraisal of the value (if over $500) which may then be tax
deductible.
Planned
or Deferred Gifts
A gift to the Portland Public Library via your estate planning or will
leaves a lasting legacy and provides tax advantages for your
family. A simple bequest via your will is encouraged by the
Portland Public Library and is the simplest of the deferred giving
vehicles. Charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and
other planned gifts will require the careful consideration of your
attorney and tax advisors but may offer substantial tax savings for
yourself and your heirs.
Please
consult your accountant, lawyer or tax advisor for details regarding the
tax advantages of a particular gift of cash, securities, personal
property or a planned gift.
