The Portland Public Library hosts a
variety of free public programs, such as book talks, lectures,
educational classes, workshops and book sales throughout the year. Check our
calendar to see what's happening this month or call our Event Line at
207-871-1710. If you would like to receive calendars
each month in the mail, just e-mail
your request to the Development and Programming Office. Most of our public programs are made possible through the
generosity of corporate and foundation sponsorships.

the PBS series Antiques Road Show to make 2 special appearances in

Brown Bag Lecture Series
The Brown
Bag Lecture Series features best-selling authors and prominent people
from Maine and New England as guest speakers and
performers. Most programs are scheduled on Wednesdays from noon - 1:00 p.m.
in
the Rines Auditorium, unless otherwise noted. Bring your lunch and
enjoy. Coffee, tea, and light refreshments are provided. All programs
are free and open to the public, and are fully accessible to people with
disabilities. Books will be available for purchase and signing at most
programs, with a portion of the proceeds designated for the Library's

Page
to Stage
Page to Stage is a thought-provoking series of sneak previews designed
to augment Portland Stage Company's mainstage season. Join the
Portland Stage Company staff and special guests as they lead stimulating
interactive discussions revealing social, cultural and historical
information about each play to help enhance the theater
experience. All
programs take place at the Library's Rines Auditorium and are FREE and
open to the Public.
Musically
Speaking
Join the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Public Library at
one of our four free programs led by Director of
the USM School of Music Scott Harris.
Musically Speaking is a series of interactive and insightful discussions
centered on listening to CD's of symphonic music taken from upcoming PSO
concerts and beyond. Scott is joined by special guests
to talk about what people hear when we take a peek behind the
compositions and discover the fun in classical music. Sharing your
thoughts and comments are essential to everyone's enjoyment! All
programs take place at the Library's Rines Auditorium and are FREE and
open to the Public.

Slippers Motivational
Life Workshops

Ruby Slippers presents lunchtime Motivational
Life Work Shops in partnership with the Portland Public
Library. Ruby Slippers helps people
clarify and cultivate their personal goals through strategic life
planning workshops, motivational seminars, support groups, and
individual counseling. See the schedule and
descriptions of upcoming, free, hour-long workshops which will take place in the Rines
Auditorium on the first floor of the Library.
Lewis
Gallery Exhibits
The Portland Public Library is proud
to provide gallery space in the Main Library to local artists and
community groups. The Lewis Gallery hosts monthly exhibits of artists from Maine and New England. Drawings,
paintings, photography, tapestries, weavings, book arts, and sculpture
are among the media shown in recent months. The Gallery is located in
the lower level of the Portland Public Library at 5 Monument Square.
Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 to 6, Tuesday and
Thursday 12 to 9, and Saturday 9 to 5.

Third
Saturdays Book Group
Join us to talk about books at the "Third Saturdays
Book Group" - Portland Public Library's Saturday afternoon book discussions.
These casual monthly gatherings feature a brief talk by a guest or a
member of the group followed by an engaging conversation about the
book.
Free
Computer Classes
The Portland Public Library offers computer classes free of charge to
all Library users. Classes range from e-mail account management to
Internet searching and use of word processing programs. Ask for a
registration form at the Reference/Information Desk or call the Main
Library at 871-1725.
