New!

Are you wondering what to do with your good-quality used books, CD's, video cassettes and DVD's?  Are your bookshelves overflowing?  Are you moving or doing some re-arranging and need to find a home for some of your books, CD's, video cassettes and DVD's? The Portland Public Library can use them!

What do you accept?  We accept gently-used books, CD's, DVD's, video cassettes, and high-quality magazines.  (We can only add a few video cassettes to our collection because we do not have much room for them!).  We cannot use materials that are worn, out-of-date or that may contain mold or mildew.  (Did you find a box of 1973 encyclopedias in your grandmother's attic?  How about a 36-year run of National Geographic? These are examples of donations we generally cannot use.)  If you have questions about a the usefulness of a donation, please give us a call at 871-1700.

What will you do with my donation?  If we cannot use the items in our collection, we will sell them on our Book Peddler (a cart containing books for sale located on the 2nd floor of the Main Library) or at one of our Book Sales.  Proceeds from these sales are used toward the purchase of new library materials and to pay for special programs.

How do I donate?  You may leave your donation at the loading dock of the Main Library at any time.  The loading dock is located on Elm Street next to the Portland Public Market.  Please call ahead if your donation is over 4 boxes (871-1700 ext. 756).  You may also bring your donation to your local branch during open hours, but please only if your donation is not very big (we must transport it to the Main Library).

Will I get a thank you letter?  Not automatically.  If you would like an acknowledgment letter, please attach your name, mailing address and description of your donation (example: 3 boxes of books or 4 children's picture books) securely to your donation.  Please be sure it is attached securely, as your donation will most likely be transported several times.  If you do not receive a letter within 2 weeks, please call the Development and Programming office at 871-1700 ext. 758 or email progdev@portland.lib.me.us.
