It is full speed ahead on renovating Portland Public Library's Monument Square building in downtown Portland.

Goals for key improvements identified in earlier renovation plans remain virtually unchanged, while design strategies have been much more refined.  Look for high profile changes, including a new Children's Library, new Teen Library, redesigned main entrance, increased space for public use computers, and an updated physical plant.

Portland Public Library is one of New England's most dynamic public libraries, and our focus continues to be on the nearly 400,000 patrons who visit the downtown location annually.  The renovated library will be safe, comfortable, and inviting, taking advantage of our premium Monument Square location.

The Library's Capital Campaign goal has also remained the same at $8.5 million, of which $6.3 million has been raised to date.

To move forward without delay, the renovation has been divided into two phases.  Phase 1, a $7 million project, will implement all key improvements for all high traffic areas.  Construction will begin in January 2009.  Phase 2 will include the creation of a Great Reading Room on the 3rd floor and a new stairway connecting the 2nd and 3rd floors.

A project architect is slated to be selected by the end of February.

To implement Phase 1, the Library needs to raise $654,000 to reach its $7 million goal.  We are pleased to report that giving to the Campaign by individuals and foundations continues.

So be generous!  Make a gift to Portland Public Library's Capital Campaign to renovate the Monument Square building and create Portland's great public space.  Thank you!
