Thank you for your Interlibrary Loan Request. Following are some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about ILL procedures.

How Do I Start the Process?

Complete an Interlibrary Loan form online or at the Reference Desk of the Main Library and at all Branches of the Portland Public Library.  We can also mail or fax forms to you. Our fax number is (207) 871-1703.
Each request is a unique transaction on the computer, so please fill out a separate form for each item. The information you provide is our only guide.  Please be sure it is accurate and complete.

Please do not abbreviate periodical titles.

How Much Does ILL Cost?

Most book and photocopy requests from reciprocating libraries are free of charge.  Sometimes, however, an item is held only at a library that charges to lend or photocopy.  Medical libraries, for example, charge a standard fee of $10.00 for a loan or photocopy. Please indicate on your request the maximum amount, if any, you would be willing to pay for your ILL.

How Long Will I Have To Wait?

Your ILL request is placed electronically, usually within one business day.  It takes an average of two weeks to fill a request.  We will notify you by mail when the item arrives. You may pick up/check out your interlibrary loan at the Circulation Desk of the main library or at the Branch you have specified.

The due date of your ILL is set by the lending library and may differ from the standard PPL loan period.  Overdue fines will accrue at the standard PPL rate per day.

Certain materials may be held for you to use only in the Portland Room or Periodicals Section due to restrictions mandated by the lending library.

Can ILLs Be Renewed?

Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library.  Please let us know at least 3 days before the due date if you wish us to request a renewal.

Answers To Questions We Wish You Would Ask

Is the paperwork in ILL books fodder for the recycling bin?
NO - please do not remove any of the paperwork in or on the books.  It contains information that is essential to either the lending library or to PPL.  Your courtesy in this matter is truly appreciated.
Why can't I return my ILL book in the book drop?
The book drop can be a cruel and treacherous place.  We cannot put another library's property at risk.
