Welcome to Portland Public
Library's Interlibrary Loan Services. We borrow items not owned by PPL from other libraries
for our patrons and for libraries in the Southern
Maine Library District. We also lend materials and provide
photocopies to other libraries in Maine and
worldwide.
The following
forms are for individual PPL patrons requesting items for
themselves.
If you don't see the
item you want in our
catalog or in MaineCat,
use the appropriate form below to ask us to search other
libraries for it. You may choose to pick up your loan at
any of PPL's locations. If you need more than one volume, please fill out one form for
each item needed. If you would like help identifying the titles you
need, please visit or call our Reference Desk at 871-1700, ext. 725.
SMLD
libraries, please use the SMLD request form
instead. Libraries from outside SMLD who wish to borrow our materials,
please use the ILL lending form instead.
Frequently Asked Questions About ILL
Where do I begin?
 |
First, check MaineCat
to see if the item you want is available within the state. MaineCat
is the fastest and most efficient way to borrow books from other
libraries.
If you can't find what you need
in MaineCat, complete an Interlibrary
Loan request form online (above), at the
Reference Desk of the main library, or at any of our branches.
Reference Librarians are available to help you with the
requesting process at 871-1700, ext. 725.
|
| Each request is a unique transaction, so fill out a separate form for each item. The
information you provide is our only guide. Please be sure it is
accurate, complete, and free of abbreviations.

How much will it cost me
to make an ILL request?
Most book and photocopy requests from
reciprocating libraries are free of charge. Sometimes, however,
an item is held only at a library that charges to lend or photocopy.
Medical libraries, for example, charge a standard fee of $11.00 for a
loan or photocopy. Please indicate on your request the maximum
amount, if any, you would be willing to pay for your ILL.
How long will it take?
Your
ILL request will be placed electronically via an international
database of library lenders. It might take a few weeks to fill a request. We will
notify you by e mail when the item arrives. You may pick up/check
out your interlibrary loan at the Lending Services desk at the main library
or at the branch you have specified.
The due date of your ILL is set by the
lending library and may differ from the standard PPL loan period.
Overdue fines will accrue at the standard PPL rate per day.
Certain materials may be held for you
to use only in the Portland Room or at one of our branches due to
restrictions mandated by the lending library.
|
 |
Can ILLs be renewed?
Renewals are granted at the discretion
of the lending library and it can take a few days for lenders to
respond to renewal requests. Please let us know at least 3 days
before the due date if you need more time.
Why can't I return my
ILL book in the book drop?
The book drop can be a cruel and
treacherous place. We cannot put another library's property
at risk.
May I recycle the
paperwork in my ILL book?
- NO! Please do not remove any of the
paperwork in or on the books. It contains information that
is essential to either the lending library or to PPL. Your
courtesy in this matter is truly appreciated.
