Maine and the Shakers
Among many fascinating topics of study in this region are the Shakers and their communities. Here in the Portland Room, we greet researchers that travel to this area to study the Shakers. Among our resources are books such as the volume pictured below, and The Shaker Quarterly.
The Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community is the world’s only living Shaker community. Well worth a visit, just north of Gray, Maine- with guided tours, events, and a crafts shop.

The Shaker Community in Alfred, Maine is home to the Christian Brothers. The Shaker Museum, pictured here, is on Shaker Hill Road, just off Route 4 north of Alfred. The famous song, “Simple Gifts,” was composed in the Alfred community.
