Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about using the library catalog.  For more information, or if your question is not here, call the reference desk at 871-1700 x725 or email  reference@portland.lib.me.us.

Q. I see a list of titles with the one I want in the middle.  How do I get the call number?

A.  If your search has pulled up a list of results, you will need to select one and click on it to get to the item record.  Then look in the box under call number.

Q. I have the call number.  How do I find the book?

A.  There are two other important pieces of information in the location box.  The first is the location.  If the location code is MAIN, it is in the Main (Monument Square) Library.  Other codes refer to branches.  After the call number is the status.  If there is a date here, the book is checked out.  Recently returned items may not be on the shelf, ask at the reference desk for assistance.

LOCATION CODES

BUR - Burbank REI - Rieche
MUN - Munjoy RIV - Riverton
PKS - Peaks Island MAIN - Main Library

Q.  There's no call number! Just a name where the call number should be.

A. Two types of books do not have call numbers, Fiction and Biography.  Fiction is shelved alphabetically by author's last name.  Biographies will have a B in the call number box and are shelved alphabetically by the subject's last name.

Q.  The library doesn't own the book I want.  What can I do?

A.  We will try to borrow a copy from another library or you may suggest the library purchase a copy.  To search for a copy in Maine InfoNet, click on the "Search Maine InfoNet" link at the top of the page.  If no copy is available in state, use the Interlibrary Loan form to request a nationwide search.
