Resource Center
Learn more about authors and works of
literature with the many sources of The Literature Resource
Center. You may find author biographies, literary criticism
and magazine articles in full text, all with one
search.
Log on: The Literature Resource
Center is part of the Marvel! Databases http://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases/
. The databases are available to
all Maine residents free of charge. If you are connecting
from home, you will need to register and select a user name and
password.
Search: If you are searching
for an author enter the author's name. To search for
criticism of a particular title, click on the title button and
then enter the title. "Authors by Type"
allows searching by criteria such as ethnicity, genre or literary
movement. "Advanced Search" gives the
opportunity to combine keywords or other search criteria.
For example, searching for the title
"Sense and Sensibility" brings up several works of
criticism, magazine articles, and links to biographies of Jane
Austen.
Maine Newsstand
Did you know that Maine
newspapers are now available online in full text? Maine
Newsstand offers the Portland Press Herald back to 1995.
Here a few tips for searching.
Log on: Maine
Newsstand is part of the Marvel! Databases The databases are available
to Maine residents in the library, at home or at work at http://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases/
. If you are outside of the library, you will need to
register and select a user name and password.
Use Advanced Search to
combine terms and limit searches.
Combine terms: use
Boolean operators to combine search terms. Surround phrases
with quotation marks.
- AND will search for the
terms in the same paragraph.
Example:
"world war II" AND "Sebago Lake"
- OR will search for either
term in the article.
Example: aircraft OR
plane OR airplane
Limit to a particular
publication by selecting Publication Title in the drop down menu
next to the search box. Then type the name of the
publication in the search box. You can also limit date
ranges or limit to full text available with the boxes at the
bottom of the screen.
Results: Once
you have a results list you can view or print articles as they
appear. Or, select articles of interest by checking the box
in the result list. Once you have all the articles you want
in your marked list, you may print or email all of the checked
results at once.
Jumpstart your summer
reading with Novelist. This database will help you find new
fiction titles that you may enjoy.

Databases and is available to Maine residents in
the library, at home or at work at http://libraries.maine.edu/mainedatabases/.
Select Novelist from the alphabetical list of databases.
Search for a book similar
to one you have already read: enter an author and select
a favorite title or enter a title. Click on the button
"Find Similar Books". You will get a list of
subject headings. Decide which are important to you and
check "required", "desired" or leave
blank. Novelist will find books that match your selected
subject headings, with the most relevant titles first.
Clicking on a title will bring up a summary and often one or more
reviews of a book.
Describe a plot: If
you remember a few key points from a book but not the author or
title, enter the information. Novelist will search for a
match.
Other options: The
Explore Fiction option will provide lists of novels divided
into categories and subcategories. Looking for cozy
mysteries? Click on mysteries and then subcategory
cozy. Book Discussion Guides: Prepare for your
next book discussion with questions and answers for many popular
books. Author Read Alikes: provides a
discussion of an author, what makes the author special, and
suggestions of other authors to try.
Create your own reading
list: As you search Novelist, click on "add to
folder" when viewing titles that interest you.
Then open your folder to see your reading list and head for the
library catalog!
