Search:  If you are searching for an author enter the author's name.  To search for criticism of a particular title, click on the title button and then enter the title.  "Authors by Type"  allows searching by criteria such as ethnicity, genre or literary movement.  "Advanced Search"  gives the opportunity to combine keywords or other search criteria.

For example, searching for the title "Sense and Sensibility" brings up several works of criticism, magazine articles, and links to biographies of Jane Austen.

Maine Newsstand

Did you know that Maine newspapers are now available online in full text?  Maine Newsstand offers the Portland Press Herald back to 1995.  Here a few tips for searching.

Use Advanced Search to combine terms and limit searches.

Combine terms: use Boolean operators to combine search terms.  Surround phrases with quotation marks.

  • AND will search for the terms in the same paragraph.
Example:  "world war II" AND "Sebago Lake"
  • OR will search for either term in the article.
Example: aircraft OR plane OR airplane

Limit to a particular publication by selecting Publication Title in the drop down menu next to the search box.  Then type the name of the publication in the search box.  You can also limit date ranges or limit to full text available with the boxes at the bottom of the screen.

Results:  Once you have a results list you can view or print articles as they appear.  Or, select articles of interest by checking the box in the result list.  Once you have all the articles you want in your marked list, you may print or email all of the checked results at once.
