Out and Allied:Performance & Discussion
Location: Rines Auditorium
Audience: Adults, Teens
What is it like to be a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning youth in Maine? What is it to negotiate the complexities of sexuality, prejudice, friendship, romance, identity and family in the early 21st Century? The stories of Maine teens will be explored through performance based on writing published in the second edition of Out & Allied, an anthology of youth writing edited and published by Ad Verb Productions. USM students will perform a selection of pieces — including a piece referencing Maurice Sendak — using the power of performance to communicate and educate and hope that this anthology will inspire others to do the same. Followed by a discussion.
The Out & Allied Anthology features 34 royalty free plays and poems. It includes a handbook with guidelines and suggestions for using theater for social change, in addition to a glossary of LGBTQ terms courtesy of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network). The book is designed to be used as a resource for staging performances and bringing to light the stories of LGBTQ youth. The anthology is available via Interlibrary Loan through Mainecat.
