The Portland Public Library presents the work of current students in the USM Book Art 341; The Visual Book 2: Historical Influences in Contemporary Artist’s Books; and members of the USM Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts Critique Group.
There are approximately 50 books in the exhibition, each emphasizing the relationship between content and form. Book formats and binding techniques include accordians, flags, fans, pop-ups, altered books, tunnels, scrolls, Coptic and leaf-stab binding, etc. A wide variety of media include linoleum and gelatin prints, monotypes, digital prints, watercolor and acrylic painting, collage, sewing, handmade papers, stamps, calligraphy, text, wax, glass, wood panel.
The USM Kate Cheney ’83 Center for Book Arts (KCCCBA) celebrates the innovative and engaging nature of book arts through lectures and workshops by national and regional book artists, and through exhibits of artists’ books.
The KCCCBA Critique Group is a dedicated group of artists who are bound together by their passion for making artists’ books and in their support of the Center. There is a concurrent exhibit by this group at the Wishcamper Center through May 31.
