Collage x 10: Exhibit in the Lewis Gallery

Friday, March 07 - Saturday, March 29
10:00am - 5:00pm

Location: Main Library
Audience: Adults, Teens, Kids & Families, Seniors

Collage x 10, featuring ten significant Maine artists, opens in the Lewis Gallery during the city’s First Friday Art Walk on March 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibition is sponsored by the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport and is co-curated by CMCA executive director Suzette McAvoy and CMCcollage xA curator emeritus Bruce Brown.

Participating artists are Daniel Anselmi (Belfast), Gabriella D’Italia (Newburgh), David Driskell (Falmouth), Stew Henderson (Northport), Charlie Hewitt (Portland), Karen MacDonald (Stockton Springs), Dan Mills (Lewiston), Shannon Rankin (Rangeley), Abbie Read (Appleton), and Noriko Sakanishi (Portland). Most works are primarily abstract in nature, as each artist depends less on rendering recognizable representations of everyday objects to express both ideas and beauty and turns instead to the essential vocabulary and tools of art itself—line, light and shadow, color, texture, volume, and space.

Collage—an assemblage of paper and other objects pasted on paper to create a third spatial dimension—dates back to the invention of paper itself, circa 200 B.C.E. in China. Its current popularity as an art form emerged only a century ago, thanks largely to Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.

The exhibition continues through Saturday, March 29, and is open free of charge during the library’s regular hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
