Ghost Ships and Opera Maine’s The Flying Dutchman

Wednesday | June 08, 2022
6:00pm - 7:00pm

Location: VIRTUAL
Audience: Adults, Discover Portland, Seniors

The Flying Dutchman sails into Casco Bay for Opera Maine‘s 27th Season.  Join dramaturg, Calien Lewis, and Maine Maritime Museum Manager of Education, Sarah Timm for a discussion of how Maine’s ghost ship lore informs Opera Maine’s Bicentennial production of Richard Wagner’s breakthrough opera. The Maine coast witnessed hundreds of shipwrecks during the Age of Sail. A few of these tragedies inspired local lore of ghost ships and legends. Sarah Timm will discuss the history and myth-making behind some of Maine’s famous (and not-so-famous) ghost ships that inspired the production design of Opera Maine’s The Flying Dutchmen.
