Main Library Book Group: Settled in the Wild
Location: meeting room (2)
Author Paul Doiron has chosen Maine author Susan Hand Shetterly’s captivating book Settled in the Wild as one of the statewide Read ME picks for summer 2018. Join us for a discussion of this thoughtful, remarkable nature memoir! PPL Readers’ Advisor Elizabeth will facilitate the discussion at our Monument Square location on Tuesday, June 19th at 5:30pm.
All who attend the discussion are encouraged to bring along thoughts on other favorite works of writing where nature, the wild, science, and people come together. We’ll offer our own recommendations of new and classic nature memoirs and science writing from Portland Public Library’s collections.
“Settled in the Wild… [is] about watching deer drift through the field at dusk and about leaving the window open in April to hear spring arrive with the first piping of the peepers. It’s about the familiar, the secret, and the strange, written by an artist whose gift it is to help us see our shared environment as we’ve never seen it before.”
Read Me is a statewide program presented in partnership with Maine Humanities Council and Maine State Library with the goal of promoting a shared reading experience. For more information about Read ME and PPL’s book group resources, visit our We Love Book Groups! page.
