Many Voices Teen Book Group: Beast
Location: S. Donald Sussman Teen Library
Audience: Teens, Teen Reads, Teen Events
Welcome to the Many Voices Teen Book Group, where we explore diversity in Young Adult fiction. This is a social event where readers will have a chance to chat after the discussion and enjoy refreshments throughout. Discussions are led by a member of the library’s Pride@PPL team.
For May we will be reading Beast by Brie Spangler.
“At nearly six foot four and covered with hair, 15-year-old Dylan Ingvarsson has been nicknamed the Beast, but he doesn’t feel like one. Mostly, he leads a quiet life, earning top grades in his class and supporting his widowed mother. When Dylan breaks his leg falling off a roof, perhaps not entirely accidentally, and ends up in therapy for self-harmers, he meets an intriguing girl named Jamie, a talented photographer, who seems to like Dylan for who he is. For the first time, Dylan finds himself falling in love, but then he learns something he missed while he was zoning out in therapy: Jamie is trans.”
About the Series » Many Voices Teen Book Group
The Many Voices Teen Book Group recognizes the need for all teens to see themselves mirrored in the books on our shelves, and to use fiction as a window into other lives, cultures, and worldviews beyond their own. This book group welcomes all teens to the discussion about some of the most diverse (and best) teen books published in recent years.
This group is open to all teens ages 12-19 interested in exploring diversity through contemporary YA fiction. We meet in the Teen Library from 2:30-3:30pm on the 2nd Wednesday of every month (unless otherwise noted) and look forward to seeing you!
For our fall session, we will be doing a special reading of Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone and giving away 10 FREE copies of the book! To receive a free book, teens must attend the first meeting in September and commit to attending at least one other meeting in 2018. Books will be distributed to the first ten teens who sign up.
- 9/12/18: Book distribution – show up to get your own free copy of Children of Blood and Bone! *This is a drop-in meeting to pick up copies of the book, so feel free to come by any time after 2:30pm.*
- 10/10/18: Children of Blood and Bone – discussion of first half
- 11/14/18: Children of Blood and Bone – discussion of second half
- 12/12/18: End of season party & choosing spring books!
