Many Voices Teen Book Group: Beast
Location: S. Donald Sussman Teen Library
Audience: Teens, Teen Reads, Teen Events
Welcome to the Many Voices Teen Book Group, where we explore diversity in Young Adult fiction. This is a social event where readers will have a chance to chat after the discussion and enjoy refreshments throughout. Discussions are led by a member of the library’s Pride@PPL team.
For May we will be reading Beast by Brie Spangler.
“At nearly six foot four and covered with hair, 15-year-old Dylan Ingvarsson has been nicknamed the Beast, but he doesn’t feel like one. Mostly, he leads a quiet life, earning top grades in his class and supporting his widowed mother. When Dylan breaks his leg falling off a roof, perhaps not entirely accidentally, and ends up in therapy for self-harmers, he meets an intriguing girl named Jamie, a talented photographer, who seems to like Dylan for who he is. For the first time, Dylan finds himself falling in love, but then he learns something he missed while he was zoning out in therapy: Jamie is trans.”
About the Series » Many Voices Teen Book Group
The Many Voices Teen Book Group recognizes the need for all teens to see themselves mirrored in the books on our shelves, and to use fiction as a window into other lives, cultures, and worldviews beyond their own. This book group welcomes all teens to the discussion about some of the most diverse (and best) teen books published in recent years.
Our winter/spring 2018 books are:
- 2/17: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
- 3/17: The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
- 4/21: Dreadnought by April Daniels
- 5/19: Beast by Brie Spangler
This group is open to all teens ages 12-19 interested in exploring diversity through contemporary YA fiction, and is a safe space for everyone, regardless of race, color, creed, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, ancestry, national origin, or physical or mental disability. Discrimination, hate speech, and harassment will not be tolerated.
