2020 Homeschool FAQ

Homeschool FAQ

I’m interested in homeschooling, where do I start?

The Maine Department of Education provides information about all of the Requirements, Forms, and Laws surrounding homeschooling. They also have their own FAQ and resource page.

What does the library provide for homeschoolers?

At PPL, we’re happy to help connect you with resources you might be looking for, including personalized recommendations (fiction or non-fiction!) through our Your Next Great Read Kids & Teens forms. We also have links to curated online resources. You might find that some of our online programming also fits your educational goals.

Can I borrow my textbooks, homeschool curriculum, or workbooks from the library?

The library doesn’t provide these types of materials. With so many different options to choose from based on class, teacher, school, and more, as well as the frequency with which these materials are updated, we are not able to keep them in our collection. Additionally, these types of books encourage writing within the pages, which also makes it difficult to keep them in our collection.

Can I meet with a group at the library?

Currently, the library is closed to the public/open only for computer use/open only for computer use and browsing and we are unfortunately unable to provide spaces for groups to meet. This is for the safety of both patrons and staff.

My question isn’t answered here.

Please feel free to email us at childrens@portlib.org, and we will get back to you with an answer!
