Cards & Resources for Child Care Providers

Library cards with special loan privileges are available to adults working in child care centers, preschools and family day care homes. These cards entitle users to a 6 week loan period for books (3 weeks for DVDS) and no overdue fines. These cards must be renewed  and expire on August 31 of each year. Cards may be issued to an entire center/preschool or to each classroom. Application for one of these special cards can be downloaded here. All forms must be returned to the Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library at our Main location at 5 Monument Square.

Along with books in the Library’s collection, there are also 60+ thematic book boxes that can be borrowed. Each tote contains 15-25 books, suitable for early childhood programs. Many of these boxes contain story extensions created by students in the Early Childhood Education program at Southern Maine Community College. A list of themes and books is located here.

Requests for these boxes need to be made in advance and can be picked up only at the Library’s Main location at 5 Monument Square.

Questions regarding these boxes and child care provider cards should be made to the Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library at 871-1700 ext. 707 or childrens@portlib.org.
