PPL Children’s Summer Reading 2020

PPL Children’s Summer Reading 2020

Happy birthday, Maine! To celebrate Maine’s 200th birthday, we’re having a party all summer long with fun challenges as part of our Summer Reading for Portland-area kids and families. Check out some FAQ below as we get ready to start this exciting program.

Who can join? Kids from birth to 12 in the Greater Portland, Maine area. Teens in middle and high school should try our teen program instead!

What do I do? Sign up for summer reading by going to our sign up website (this will be available once our program begins on June 15th!). Get one of our game boards. Try to meet the challenges for this year–reading or listening to eight books and completing eight game spaces from the map on the front.

How do I get a game board? You can print one yourself here (full-color version map front or printer-friendly version map front and the log and instructions on the back). You may get one from a teacher, your school, or at a summer program; we will make printed copies available at all PPL locations as we move to curbside services this summer, and we hope to make them available at summer meal sites via our community partners.

What if I can’t read yet? Any books count! Books that are read to you, books that you listen to using audiobook programs like Tumblebooks, even books that are read on our YouTube channel. Even if you are able to read your own books, listening to books is a great way to fill up your game board.

When is the program? Summer Reading officially begins June 15th and will continue throughout July and August.

What are the prizes? Do I have to finish to get a prize? This year will be a little different! Rather than receiving prizes at the end, we hope to be able to give anyone who signs up a new book as soon as we can do so safely. Keep checking back for more information on this. We also hope to be able to hand out stickers.

Will there be programming? Yes! However, we will not hold in-person programming this summer. Instead, make sure you are following us on our Instagram page and YouTube channel or checking our website frequently to see the programming that we are offering.
