Voting in Portland

November 2024 Election

In-person early absentee voting is now underway at City Hall.

The last day to in-person absentee vote is Thursday, October 31, unless you have a special circumstance. The Clerk’s Office will be open until 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 31 for voter registration and in-person absentee voting only.

External ballot drop boxes are available at City Hall on Myrtle Street and at our administrative offices at 212 Canco Road. Your absentee ballot must be returned to one of these places by 8:00 PM on November 5 and not to your normal polling place.

Please return absentee ballots as soon as you can as we have a high volume of requested absentee ballots.

Registering to Vote

Portland residents can register to vote on Election Day at your polling location. Portland residents can also register early by mailing in a Voter Registration Application (PDF) or by filling out that form and visiting us in person.

In order to register to vote, you must fill out the Voter Registration Application (PDF) and provide documents that show Proof of Identity (PDF) proof of residency. A driver’s license or state identification card with the current address meets both criteria.

If you mail in your voter registration card, you must send Proof of Identity (PDF) such as a photocopy of your driver’s license or other ID or an acceptable form that shows Residency. To learn more, visit the State of Maine Voter Information Page.
