Portland’s Historic Eastern Cemetery: A Field of Ancient Graves

Portland’s oldest public space, Eastern Cemetery, reached a milestone 350th anniversary in 2018.

In a program rich with photos, maps and images of historic documents and gravemarkers, cemetery historian and author Ron Romano will guide us on a virtual tour through the site’s rich history. We’ll get a peek inside the City Tomb, an overview of the remote patches designated for minorities, and a look at how the landscape has changed over the centuries.

Spotlights will shine on both the famous and the ordinary citizens whose life journeys ended at the ancient burying ground. From murderers and bank robbers to Quakers and war heroes, there are endless stories to be told…
