MEET VICKY: BEEKEEPER, BOOK READER, AND PPL ACCESS SERVICES DIRECTOR

A headshot of Vicky Smith, PPL's Access Services Director

Public libraries are powerful institutions offering community connections, consistency, and sustenance. This work is big and fueled by an ever-evolving selection of resources and materials, and, lucky for PPL, we have a team to power the process…our dynamic library staff!

Vicky Smith joined PPL in September 2021 as the new Access Services Director at our Downtown Library. With her she brought a diverse background in the areas of education, advocacy, and children’s literature.

“For 13 years, I was young readers’ editor at Kirkus Reviews. I left that job because, as I told my colleagues, after 25-plus years, the right job finally opened up at my hometown public library.”

Vicky became a card-carrying PPL borrower at 5. Then, when PPL opened its new location in Monument Square in 1978, she got the “grown-up” card she still uses. “This was a Big Deal, because it gave me access to all the books in the building. I can’t tell you how much time I spent in the stacks here as a teenager. I am still giddy to be a part of the institution that meant so much to me growing up.”

Vicky’s range of professional and personal experiences are an incredible asset to those who work with her and the community she serves:

Thank you, Vicky, for enriching our space with your love of libraries and literacy.
